Progressive Scan (PAL/NTSC) The conventional television system has 525 scan lines making up a frame, but these are scanned in alternate interlaced passes of the 262.5 odd scan lines and the 262.5 even scan lines (in the case of the NTSC color system). Since its frame rate is 30 frames per second, one of these passes, termed a field, occurs every 1/60 second. In distinction to this, a progressive scan is one where all of the lines are scanned successively in a single pass. By saving a field in memory, it is possible to convert an interlaced video signal to a progressive scan, which then allows the image to be refreshed every 1/60 second reducing flickers on a large screen. AV Sync With the new digital televisions and improved video processing it is becoming more frequent to have fixed delays in video that make the audio appear to be ahead of the picture. In addition to this, some digital technologies, like direct view LCD televisions already have inherent delays of as much as 15-20 milliseconds, prior to any video processing. Some plasma screens even need to put data into internal memory before displaying picture, which can result in 20-60 milliseconds of delay. The A/V sync function allows you to match the audio and video signals via the A/ V system thereby giving you a more coordinated visual and audio experience. Precision Cinema Progressive Using twice the number of scanning lines compared to the more common interlaced format, Progressive Scan is able to accurately reproduce the naturalness of rocks, water and even the texture of skin. Clearly notice the difference on a large-screen TV, where scanning lines from interlaced scanning are quite apparent. A poor Progressive Scan system does not feature the advanced technology to distinguish scenes combining a variety of elements, such as after effects, resulting in the phenomenon depicted above.
